4x4 Volunteers Deliver Rescue Services

Whilst a great deal of United Kingdom residents remained at home, unable to get out due to the snow in February there was a team of committed 4x4 voluntary workers offering their services to the local community in Bristol.

This amazing group of people, the Wessex 4x4 Response team was established way back in 2002, originally set up to assist local charity services in Bristol and the surrounding areas. Over the years it has continually developed into a totally invaluable service now offering a variety of voluntary support services for many sectors of the local community and supporting civil services. The response team has now developed into a sixty strong team who have proved themselves not only to be highly effective but also extremely organised.

Despite being some 60 strong the group are always keen to attract new members and this is not restricted to people who only have 4x4 vehicles, it also wants volunteers without 4x4 vehicles as they also have support service requirements they need help with.

During the snowy period in February when many people in the community were advised not to go onto onto the roads, there was still of course a massive requirement for essential services to be delivered to many in the community. For example; meals on wheels to the elderly trapped in their homes, essential staffing of people such as - Doctors, nurses, police officer and also prison officers to name just few.

Much credit goes out to these amazing volunteers who, through their own time and indeed expense offered to support others in the community.

The Wessex 4x4 response team are just one of at least 21 other groups setup throughout the United Kingdom who offer essential and in some cases life saving voluntary services during periods of bad weather and extreme circumstances
