Brown has to submit to back bench and public pressure over 10p tax row

Government U-turn, or Not

Gordon Brown yesterday had to admit that he did in-fact get it wrong. What is now being dubbed the 10p tax row has been in the headlines for the past week and many expected to see the Prime Minister to fight the issue to the bitter end given his recent defiance and hard words.

It was Brown himself who introduced the 10p Tax reform when he was Chancellor and he was quick to comment on the fact that he would bend to back bench pressure on the issue. Many believe the Prime Minister will be seething over having to implement this 'apparent' U-turn but the fact is this was a very underestimated issue that could in fact have have turned out to be his undoing, but at the same time, many are commenting on his weakness for making changes.

The word U-turn is probably being used out of turn in many articles being written on the subject because the reality is this is not a full U-turn on the 10p Tax row, in-fact it is a somewhat weak statement inciting that changes will be made to certain benefits to compensate those affected by the 10p tax reform and if administrative competence is anything to be measured by the government are not exactly leaders in efficiency, particularly when Tax Credits is one of the areas being stated for amendment.

In British politics it very often appears to be a no win situation for all involved.
