Asda, who are owned by American supermarket giants Wal Mart have been reported as the company responsible for accusing the industry of taking part in price fixing activities.

The Office of Fair trading is looking into the allegations whilst other supermarkets being accused of being involved are reported to be fuming. Sainsburys in particular are reported to be angry that the Office of Fair Trading is effectively wasting time investigating allegations given the fact that the other regulator, the Competition Commission has just completed a two year investigation, reporting no such wrong doing within the multi billion pound industry.

The apparent allegations put forward by Asda have instigated the Office of Fair Trading to make visits to some of the biggest food distributors in Britain and to also visit Asda's competitor supermarkets.

It is believed that Asda as the apparent whistleblowers may also find themselves immune from being fined if actions are later taken. The supermarket industry has already experienced the brunt of price fixing investigations within the dairy sector where multi million pound fines have already been issued.
