Garden Advice on Weed Control
Mowing the weeds out of the lawn doesn't exactly accommodate a long term fix to the problem, weed control is far better managed by hand or where possible using quality weed killers. The use of the mowing is okay if your are keen to cut the grass on a regular to basis in order to prevent seed growth and to control surface growth of weeds, particularly those such as clover, chickweed, speedwell or trefoil to name a few. Raking before mowing is also another tip to bear in mind.
For those who have the time, we would always suggest hand weeding as the perfect solution, as long as you take care in your process. You really need to use the right tool and make sure you get those roots well and truly out of the ground. We find that using an old long bladed knife works particularly well for this. Dig nice and deep to get the taproot our completely, even small pieces of remnant root can grow the weed back.
Chemical controls are fine as long as you completely read the instructions provided with the chemical weed control. Some are simply not suitable for use on the lawn and in fact can have a devastating effect. Possibly the best type of chemical weed killers to use on the lawn are hormone based weed killers, you should ideally seek advice from your local garden centre before applying weed killers.
