Composting to Help the Recycling Campaign
When you compost at home it is the most effective, cheap and simple way of getting rid of your home and garden waste in the most eco friendly way without causing damage to the environment around us. Composting at home can be fun and allows you to condition your soil to help you achieve a healthier garden. By creating compost at home not only do you reduce waste being dumped in landfill sites but you are also allowing waste to naturally decompose so it can be used to feed your soil and nurture it so your plants are healthy. By following the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle you can make good quality compost at home and do your bit for a healthier environment.
To make the perfect compost at home, the right mixture of ingredients needs to be used. For creating good quality effective compost a few rules need to be observed to ensure that you are successful. When making compost 50% must be brown materials and 50% must be green materials. Ensure you mix or turn the pile of compost to ensure air is circulated through the mixture. By doing this regularly you speed up the whole process of composting.
Make sure your compost bin if using one is moist and not damp or flooded with water. Too much wetness can drown the matter and kill the organisms you are composting. Ensure the organic matter you are using is shredded into small pieces speeding up decomposition. If using a compost bin make sure it is the right size. If too small it will not retain the heat and if the bin is too large it will not circulate the air properly. A medium sized bin will be manageable and produce a good quality compost to spread in your garden giving it a whole new healthiness.
