Car Insurance Companies Do Like to Mix Phone Numbers to Recoup Costs
If you are anything like us then it might make you pretty angry when you can always get directly through to a sales representative in split seconds but then on the other hand you find yourself dangling on the telephone line for what seems to be hours when you actually want some desperately needed after sales support.
Knowing this it will come as no surprise to know this is in fact a well established business strategy adopted by many companies to help recoup costs that are incurred from offering free phone 0800 line for initial sales enquiries, and the sector of car insurance call centres is one of the biggest and most established industries using the technique.
Similar to many other industries a large majority of car insurance call centres publish 0800 freephone contact details in order to entice consumers for the new business they want and very often the business policy is to get those calls answered as if their life depended on it. Isn't it then wholly annoying however that once they have your new business it seems like they couldn't care less about how long it takes to answer the phone for any after sales customer service enquiries you might later have.
The very simple reason behind this is they can make money by leaving you hanging on the telephone phone because all those after sales, renewals, customer services and general enquiry lines are more often than not telephone numbers starting with 0870, 0844 or some other strange configurations. The numbers actually generate income for the companies who use them as contact numbers and yes, the longer you are on the telephone the more they can make in revenue back from the phone companies who provide them. It might also make you realise why these calls are also always answered immediately by the dreaded auto-attendant, the automated system that likes to welcome you and then tell you your call is important, and please hold the line as you are in a que.
Because the call has been answered by the auto-attendant you are now connected and from that point forward you are now paying a price with telephone charges for your patience. In some instances you might as well go and take a shower, make the coffee or sit down to watch your favourite soap before actual human intervention comes into life on the other end of the phone. One of the most vile tactics used by some car insurance companies is when you think you are clever enough to call them on their freephone 0800 sales lines to asked to be transferred only to be informed you have to call back on the right department number (remember the one, that makes them money!) even when the person you actually want in no more than a stones throw away. Most car insurance companies have one major phone system and there is actually no way in a million years that they cannot transfer you to the right department, it is simply company policy that staff have to inform you to call back on the premium line.
In a recent study a large number of car insurance companies were named and actually shamed for literally over charging their customers on these premium 08 numbers, many of them were very reputable car insurance call centres. The sad thing as well is they don't actually realise the importance of customer care and then they get surprised when they don't come back to the them and wonder why there renewals are down every year. They are so focused on selling cheap motor insurance to new customers they simply can't be bothered once they have got you.
